The school Newspaper this semester hightlighted each of the Foreign Teachers. As a continual story they decided to make a garden. So the first question I got asked in my interview was “What kind of flower are you?”  I actually laughed at the reported. “Well, that’s a truly Chinese question” I answered. My student, who was translating, offered the suggestion of a Rose. Yeah right. She finally said it didn’t matter, after the interview the reporter would have a better idea and could choose a flower for me. So what did I end up with?

Dandelion Seriously! The obnoxious weed my mother would pay 5¢ for if she could see substantial root. Yes Mom, I’m sure you would agree. I have to admit it was better then Cattail which was what I had originally thought the translation was.  Julie was rolling with that one.

I’ve pasted an English version below if anyone would care to try their hand at good ol’ Chinglish. I have to say I’ve got some mad skills in that department now and find the Google Translation version quite readable. As you can see Chinese is much more compact which makes for thin newspapers.

Also may I say in my defense half of what is in the article was NOT in the interview. I was cringing as my student translated. She embellished with plenty of personal stories from class. Word to the wise don’t let a student you don’t exactly see eye to eye with translate during a newspaper interview.
